A NUISANCE driver who left a Bradford couple with “horrendous” injuries after attacking them in an alleyway near their home has been jailed.

Haroon Junaid, 23, left Collette Cushing with a fractured skull after assaulting her when she tried to stop him punching her husband Chris outside their house on Grove Road in Frizinghall on July 30.

Prosecutor Robert Galley told Bradford Crown Court that the Cushings had become “increasingly concerned” at a car being repeatedly driven loudly and at speed up and down the street, where they had lived for 11 years.

At around 10.30pm on the night of the incident, Mr Cushing, 57, heard the car at the back of the house and went outside to try and get an image of the vehicle on his phone in order to report it to police.

After getting a picture, he began walking back towards the house when Junaid, said to have been the driver of the car, followed him.

Mr Galley said the defendant punched Mr Cushing, who had previously suffered kidney failure and was also blind in one eye, twice to the face, knocking him to the floor.

When Mrs Cushing, 53, tried to intervene, she was also hit in the face and fell to the ground.

When she got up, she saw Junaid kicking her husband while he lay on the floor, stating he was “putting all his force into them, aiming deliberately at his head.”

She once again ran towards the defendant, and again fell to the ground after colliding with Junaid.

The couple managed to get back inside the house where they were helped by a neighbour, who took them to Bradford Royal Infirmary.

The man told police he had heard Junaid shouting: “Next time I will sort them out proper.”

Mr Galley told the court that Mrs Cushing suffered two temporal fractures to her skull, and a broken eye socket, cheekbone, nose, and tooth.

She also dislocated her shoulder, leaving a permanent deformity, and was left with cuts to her lip and nose.

Mr Cushing did not suffer any fractures, but had cuts to his head, eye, and nose and was kept in hospital for observation.

In a victim impact statement, Mrs Cushing said that she had suffered six weeks of headaches and dizziness since the attack, which had also left her unable to work.

The court heard her shoulder was now “permanently out of place”, and she had spent nearly £3,000 on dental treatment.

Mr Galley said the couple had “become increasingly anxious and fearful” at their home, and now intended to move.

Junaid, of Bradford Road, Frizinghall, had pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm to Mrs Cushing and assault occasioning actual bodily harm against Mr Cushing prior to yesterday’s hearing.

Shufqat Khan, for Junaid, said his client, who acted as a carer for his mother, was “deeply sorry” for his actions and would be seeking to address his anger management issues in prison.

Judge Jonathan Rose said the Cushings had been acting as “decent citizens” in trying to report Junaid to the police, but he had decided he “wouldn’t let them get away with it.”

Jailing Junaid for 32 months, he said: “You saw it as a means of entertainment to drive in a manner which affects people on that particular street. It was wholly unnecessary.

“This couple only wanted to be left alone in peace. You thought you would be the big man.”

On attacking Mr Cushing, Judge Rose told Junaid: “You decided to give him a beating. He was more than twice your age, he was no match for the venom of your violence.

“When a 13-stone man kicks another man in the head, he runs the risk of causing serious injury or death.”

On the injuries suffered by Mrs Cushing, he said: “She was no match for your punch, she was knocked down immediately. You caused that lady quite horrendous injuries. All because her husband took a photo of your car.

“This was a dreadful attack with long-term consequences, both physical and psychological.

“One of the saddest aspects of this case is that you have driven this couple out of their home.”
