A PENSIONER died on holiday in Arizona five days after falling in his hotel room, an inquest heard.

Retired cabinet maker Ronald Whitmill, of Staincliffe Drive, Keighley, was on the US trip with his grandson Edward Mawby, 26, last month.

Bradford Coroner's Court was told how the 85-year-old, who was a widower, had mobility issues and used a wheelchair or walking sticks.

On August 12 he had overbalanced while putting down a magazine in his hotel room but did not think he was hurt and went ahead with a pre-planned sightseeing trip on a coach, accompanied by his grandson.

He told Mr Mawbv he was feeling alright because he had fallen on his good hip but later that day during the trip he started to feel discomfort, the inquest was told.

Mr Whitmill managed to get out on one stop but after crawling to get off the coach on the second stop he only got halfway up the coach steps while trying to board again when he started screaming out in pain.

The coach driver rang an ambulance and Mr Whitmill was taken to the nearest hospital in Cottonwood but was later flown to a regional trauma medical centre in Flagstaff.

Bradford Coroner Martin Fleming heard how Mr Whitmill initially seemed to be progressing well.

It was agreed his grandson should continue with the trip so his holiday was not spoilt and the pair kept in touch on the phone.

On August 17, Mr Mawby received a phone call from the hospital saying his granddad was deteriorating.

He managed to get to the hospital and was with him when he died.

Mr Whitmill's body was flown back to the UK where a post-mortem examination found he had died from pneumonia due to a fracture of his acetabulum, the socket of his left hip bone.

Mr Fleming concluded his death was accidental.
