CAMPAIGNERS fighting the waste-to-energy incinerator plant plans for Keighley have been handed a “big boost” after winning leave for a judicial review.

Aire Valley Against Incineration (AVAI) has reported its application has been accepted for a judicial review of Bradford Council’s decision to approve proposals by Endless Energy Ltd for the site off the A650.

Opponents of the controversial application argue it will inflict harmful pollution on the Aire Valley and its surroundings, and will blight the landscape.

But Endless Energy has said the facility will provide an environmentally-friendly form of energy, while conforming to strict European emissions standards.

The judicial review, on a date yet to be announced, has been backed by Keighley MP John Grogan, who will answer residents’ questions at a public meeting on Monday, October 2, from 7.30pm to 9pm at Central Hall in Alice Street, Keighley.

He said: “This is great news. I have not heard when it will happen.

“I think they have a very strong case. I am hoping that the development will be halted in the courts. If not, plan B will be the Environment Agency. There are still no signs that the company has applied for any environmental permits. That process will take up to a year, so this story will run and run.

“This is definitely a big boost after a massive fundraising effort.

“This could be a turning point.”

Councillor Ros Dawson, Bingley Town Council chairman, said: “I am delighted that this has gone to judicial review. It is a real testament to the hard work of the campaign group.

“I hope the review will produce the outcome the campaigners want.

“The majority of Bingley town councillors are against plans for the incinerator.

“We, as a council, have not discussed this latest announcement. We will do so at our next meeting.”

The total raised by AVAI to fund its campaign stands at £28,792.

A statement on AVAI’s Facebook page said: “The case has also been designated as ‘significant’ – this means it is getting the serious attention it deserves.

“Although we do not yet have a date, we know the case will be heard in Leeds.

“We will, of course, let everybody know when a date has been set. But for now, the campaign continues to gain momentum.”

The campaigners are inviting supporters to display one of their ‘not for sale’ boards, to keep the campaign in the public eye.

Anyone wanting one should contact Penny at notforsale@avai.org.uk, Rachel on 01535 664933, or message the group via Facebook.
