PLANS to build a new petrol station in Wakefield Road on the outskirts of the city centre have been approved.

The site was formerly used as a filling station that has since fallen into disrepair, and the plan will see the site redeveloped.

It will include a new shop, pumps, a cash machine, new underground fuel storage tanks, and a new car park.

Planning officer Ross Hallam said the proposal will see the “existing uninspiring brick built filling station replaced with a modern equivalent”.

He added: “The proposal will represent a significant visual improvement of the site, especially given its current run down state.”

Once built, the petrol station will operate 24 hours a day, however the applicants, MRH Retail, have been ordered to ensure sufficient pollution prevention and safe highway access is installed at the site.
