A FUNDRAISER will take place to help a family whose house and garden were badly damaged when a car crashed into it during a shooting incident in the district.

Last Wednesday, a Mitsubishi Shogun careered through the fence of a house on West Royd Drive in Shipley, destroying a mobility scooter and damaging the property.

The mobility scooter is a lifeline for David Warne, who lives in the house with his wife Joan, who is herself undergoing chemotherapy. Luckily for the couple, they were away at the time of the incident.

Christina Robinson and her friend Joanne Howard will stage a fundraising event at the Horse and Farrier, Kings Road, Bradford, on Saturday between noon and 4pm to help raise money to replace the scooter and fix damage in the garden area.

Mr Warne was given the scooter by his family for Father’s Day, as he has difficulty walking long distances. Although the social housing property they live in will be repaired shortly, anything outside the house is not covered. The incident involved the discharge of a firearm in West Royd Drive at about 10.40pm on Wednesday, August 30 before the crash. Five arrests have been made in connection with the shooting. Four have been released pending further enquiries while a fifth was “de-arrested” so he could be treated for injuries. None have been charged yet.

A public reassurance meeting following the shooting will take place on Wednesday from 7pm, at Windhill Community Centre on Church Street, and police have stepped up patrols in the area.

Miss Robinson, 35, of Platt Court, Shipley, who is friends with the homeowners, said: “We will look to raise whatever we can. I live near them and it is quite scary what happened. Everything that they worked hard on in their garden has gone.”

The couple’s son Glen said that, as well as the damage to the fence and scooter, the crash left a dent in the wall of the house, knocked a radiator off the wall and led to cracks in the building’s masonry.

He added: “It was just by sheer luck that we decided to take them away on a trip that week, they would have been sat inside right near where the car hit the wall. The whole thing was quite a shock, but people have come forward to help. She’s helped a lot of people in the community over the years, so it is good there has been this response.”
