FIREFIGHTERS have issued another warning to youngsters about the perils of entering “dangerous” buildings and deliberately setting them alight.

Concerns have been raised after further incidents of arson in two derelict buildings in Bradford on Monday night.

At around 8pm, crews from Odsal and Bradford were called to a three-storey building on Manchester Road in Bankfoot after reports of people being trapped inside.

On arrival with police and paramedics, a spokesman for the Odsal crew said they found “lots of kids playing around” at the site.

He added that the fire had been caused by rubbish inside the disused building being set ablaze.

The spokesman said: “That building is a real mess. It is dangerous even for us to enter, so kids should not be playing in there.”

A member of staff from the nearby Red Lion Hotel said she had seen fire crews on the street near the building, which she described as an old “dance hall”.

She added it was not the first time the building had been hit by fire.

One of the ground-floor entrances was boarded up yesterday, and a pile of charred wood had been left on the pavement outside.

The second incident, at around 8pm, involved crews being called to another deliberate fire at Yorkshire Martyrs School in Tong, the third incident in the past week.

It is now at least six times this year that crews have been called to the site, which is owned by Liversedge-based Apollo Beds Ltd, to tackle arson attacks.

Crews from Fairweather Green, Cleckheaton, Dewsbury, and Morley were called to the latest blaze, and a spokesman for the Fairweather Green crew described the condition of the site as “very insecure.”

Last week, Odsal Watch Commander Abid Qureshi described the actions of the youths thought to be behind the fires as “not funny and not clever”, leaving them at risk of becoming trapped.

He said: “The danger is that they may start a fire and not be able to get out. These places are not to play in.”
