CAMPAIGNERS have vowed they will “fight wherever they can” to stop plans to build 95 new homes on a green field site in Clayton.

Barratt Homes wants to build the properties on a patch of land, which it states has been safeguarded for future development, off Westminster Avenue, and a spokesman said a formal planning application would be submitted “within two weeks”.

In response to the proposed development, residents established the Keep Clayton Green Action Group, designed to protect the area from “inappropriate” new housing developments.

The group lodged an e-petition, signed by 124 people, urging Bradford Council to consider the wider implications of building on Clayton’s green fields, and chairman Richard Ing said opposition to the Westminster Avenue development was fierce.

“Lots of people are against the plans, and we are just waiting for the application to go in,” he said.

“As soon as that happens, we will be objecting. We have got a wildlife expert looking at the site and we also have a traffic survey going on. The development isn’t right for Clayton, and we will fight it wherever we can.”

Barratt has previously stated that plans for the site include a mixture of three and four-bedroom terrace properties, with the properties targeted at the family market. Work was ongoing on the street last week, but Barratt said the removal of a fence to gain access to the site was done by the landowner and not its contractors.

A spokesman for Barratt Developments Yorkshire said: “Regarding Westminster Avenue, Barratt has not yet commenced development on the site. We understand that the current landowner has removed an unlawfully erected fence from the entrance which was blocking access into the site.

“A planning application will be submitted on this site by Barratt within the next two weeks.”

Barratt also confirmed that previously mooted plans for another major development in the Fairweather Green area of Bradford had now been shelved.

Residents had formed the Save the Green BD8 group in response to a proposal to build around 180 new houses on land off Leaventhorpe Lane.

The group said it had been told that negotiations to buy the land had fallen through, and a Barratt spokesman said: “Barratt has no further involvement with this site and has no plans to build within the immediate area.”
