THE FUTURE of the Queensbury 1940s Day could be under threat unless new committee members are found.

That’s the warning from event organisers as they issue a desperate plea for new people to come on board.

The popular event, which is filled with entertainment, music, stalls, army and display vehicles and featured a Spitfire flypast last year, began in 2014 and has grown since then.

But organisers say this will only continue if they can find new volunteers to take it over.

Committee chairman Stuart Walker said: “This event is enjoyed by many local residents and visitors from much further afield.

“We are in desperate need of new committee members, especially those from the younger generations to bring in new ideas, take over the tasks including paperwork and many physical tasks not only on the day but the days before and after.

“Some of the existing committee are now thinking of retiring mainly due to ever advancing years.

“They would happily assist any new members as they complete the paperwork, make arrangements and other tasks. The new members could then be in a position to take over in a few months.”

Mr Walker said he would be “disappointed” if nobody could be found to take it on, but said the day now needs younger people to move it forward.

“Whilst I will be standing down, I’m quite willing to mentor someone and get them through it,” he said.

“I’m not going to just pack up and walk away.”

Mr Walker said that without this help, it’s likely the 1940s day will come to an end.

He urged people to think about joining the committee and help “bring joy to the community”.

Vice chair Joan Milner added: “We just want somebody to come on board to take it over.

“We’ll get them through everything - everything has been booked for next year.”

Mrs Milner added: “Last year we had the spitfire flyover. I was just mesmerised.

“I could not believe the atmosphere in the village.

“All the people come together and it’s a really good day from 11am until 6.30pm, then we go to the Conservative Club for dancing.

“People love it. Please come on board to help us,” she urged.

“I don’t want it to go. I’m hoping people will come forward.”

If you are interested in getting involved, the next committee will be held on Monday, September 11, and the AGM will be held on Monday, October 9. Both are at the George III, Chapel, Street, Queensbury, at 6.30pm. If you think you may be able to help, call Stuart on 0781 520 1650 or Joan on 07739 112 426.
