A SUSPECTED stolen car was torched after crashing into a farmer's drystone wall in Thornton.

It happened at about 9.30pm yesterday at the junction of Maltkin Road and Dean Lane.

People living in houses nearby heard a smash and when they went out to investigate saw the occupants of the Audi S3 set it on fire and run away, said Crew Commander Ahsan Ali from Fairweather Green Fire Station who attended.

"The suspected stolen car was significantly more damaged than the wall. I'd be surprised if they'd got away without any injuries. The car was in a bad way before they torched it," he said.

A police spokesman said: The vehicle has been recovered for further enquiries."
