EXTRA police officers have been drafted into Shipley following a number of burglaries in the town.

Sergeant Jim Calpin, of the Shipley Neighbourhood Patrol team, tweeted on Monday night: “Extra cops tonight in the Shipley ward area targeting burglars due to recent rise. Don’t make it easy! #NoValuablesOnShow #PolicingBradford.”

The officers have been deployed in the Shipley constituency ward area, which also includes Baildon and Bingley.

No further details of how many officers have been made available.

The move has been hailed as a boost for Shipley and will be seen as reassuring for residents.

Councillor Debbie Davies (Con, Baildon) said she and her fellow town councillors held a meeting with Inspector Julie Deacon, of Shipley Neighbourhood Team, last week when she told them of an increase in burglaries in the Shipley ward this summer.

Cllr Davies said they were told that burglaries have particularly increased on houses and garages, and there has also been a rise in the number of cars being stolen.

She said: “The police are being proactive. They are putting officers in areas where there has been a spike in the number of burglaries. They are putting extra resources where they need to.”

Cllr Hawarun Hussain (Green, Shipley) said she felt reassured that extra officers have been deployed in the area.

She said: “It’s really, really good. This is fantastic news for Shipley.

“To do this it must have been an area of concern.

“I think most residents will see this as a positive thing, that police are dealing with it, and also think that it is good to hear.”

West Yorkshire Police has run a burglary prevention campaign, Forgotten Something, during the spring and summer.

The campaign warns that burglaries often increase during the spring and summer months, when raiders take advantage of people leaving doors and windows open during the warmer weather.

The campaign also runs a number of tips for residents to follow to deter burglars.

These include shutting windows at home, locking doors behind you even if people are temporarily out in the garden, and homeowners cancelling their milk and newspaper deliveries when they go on holiday and find a trusted neighbour or friend to move post and open and close blinds and curtains.
