DERYCK Fox, a member of Bradford Northern's Hall of Fame, is still having an influence at Odsal.

The 52-year-old Yorkshire, England and Great Britain scrum half or stand-off is teaching the Bulls' under-19 Academy team's backs and half-backs about game control and kicking.

Fox, also a Hall of Fame member at Featherstone Rovers, has been helping out at training on Thursday nights for a month, and said: "They have really taken on board some of the things that I have been teaching them, especially when it comes to tactical and positional kicking.

"They're learning and they are starting to ask questions about stuff that I used to do when I played, and it is great to see them getting involved.

"I've really been enjoying it so far – it's nice to be asked to get back involved with one of the clubs that I used to play for."

Fox, whose kicking game often created havoc in the opposition ranks, and particularly his reverse kicks, added: "To get a good victory, you need a good kicking game.

"I watched them play against Castleford the other week and they were superb in defence, but when it comes to attack, if you have a few things up your sleeve that the opposition don't know about then you can catch people off guard."

As for his reverse kick, Fox explained: "The boys have started to call it the 'Foxy'.

"They have been asking me how I did that and why, because they aren't really used to seeing stuff like that in the modern game.

"It's nice that they are taking it on board and the way I am teaching them. Tactical kicking in a game these days can be a game-changer.

"It's hard to have someone else come in so late into the season and change the way they play.

"I would really like to come in in pre-season and work with them from there."

Academy head coach Leigh Beattie said: "The lads have started to respond to him. I can tell it is showing in their games and training.

"The boys really appreciate him coming down and helping out.

"Deryck is great, he has loads of enthusiasm and he loves the coaching aspect. He enjoys being around the lads and helping them.

"He's obviously had a great career and his kicking game was next to none, so it's great that we have got him down to help our halves and full backs improve their kicking game."
