A PROJECT to promote local artists is going from strength to strength as the latest exhibition hits Bradford’s big screen.

Not Just Hockney was set up by arts enthusiast Colin Neville and his website is now in its second year with work from 300 artists displayed there.

This month he has picked out five more artists, whose work is being displayed daily on City Park’s big screen.

The ongoing exhibition is supported by Bradford City of Film, which runs the big screen and its contents.

Mr Neville, who wanted to provide outdoor gallery space to local artists, told the Telegraph & Argus: “The Not Just Hockney website is in its second year and there are now around 300 artists, past and present, with Bradford district connections, profiled on it – including, of course, David Hockney.

“The numbers of visitors to the site has been steadily increasing over this period, with around 12,000 hits a month. I keep finding more visual artists to add to the site too, and that’s due to a great creative buzz and energy around district that encourages creative people to settle and work here.

“The evidence of that is on the Big Screen in City Park every month. This month is no exception, with the husband and wife art duo, of David and Heather Cook, both with a distinguished history of exhibiting work locally and nationally between them – David has even designed book covers for the author, Bill Bryson.

“John Myers is an award-winning social documentary photographer from Bradford, and Terry Greene and Jane Sedgwick, both from the Haworth area, have each built a strong following for their respective and very original approaches to art. “

David Wilson, director of Bradford UNESCO City of Film said: “August is a prime time to have pictures on the screen as City Park is buzzing with people. We’re delighted to be screening amongst the artists David Cook’s striking landscapes, photographer John Myers’ photographs documenting local people and their lives and Jane Sedgwick’s mixed media work inspired by nature.”

The five artists for August are:

David Cook, a Bingley-born painter and teacher. His work covers landscape and remembered locations. He approaches his work in diverse ways, which allows for invention and development of ideas in an experimental manner. His work has been exhibited across the UK and overseas. David has also designed book covers for Bill Bryson books, including Notes from a Small Island, and A Walk in the Woods.

Heather Cook, a mixed media and collage artist, who was born near Keighley and studied art at Bradford College and the Royal College of Art. She was awarded a Shand Kydd Travel Scholarship and in 2011 a printmaking residency at the Finnish Print Centre, Jyvaskyla. Her collage works range from compositional studies to small atmospheric seascapes. Heather’s work has been exhibited widely across the north of England.

Terry Greene, a Keighley-based painter. His work explores the duality of paint: its structure, and its agency. His work can be found in private art collections in the UK and overseas, and has been shown at galleries across the UK, including in London, Manchester and Castleford.

John Myers, a Bradford-born photographer. His award-winning work has, over many years, documented the lives of British people, their homes, and the urban spaces around them. His work has been shown widely across the UK and overseas in both solo and group exhibitions, including at the Hayward Gallery and Serpentine Gallery in London. It is also in the permanent collections of the Arts Council and the V&A in London.

Jane Sedgwick, an artist and teacher who lives in Haworth. She uses a range of art media, including acrylic, ink, pastel and clay, and her artwork is often inspired by all forms of nature. Jane has been a regular contributor and co-ordinator of the Haworth Festival Art Trail and her work has been exhibited at the Menier Gallery in London, Huddersfield Art Gallery, and at East Street Arts in Keighley.

Images of all five artists’ work are being shown on the big screen every day in August at 12.30pm.
