CONCERNED residents say it is a miracle nobody was killed or injured in a horror smash on a “problem” Bradford road.

A scene of chaos erupted in Netherlands Avenue, Wibsey, on Saturday morning when a BMW is thought to have ploughed into two parked cars.

The crash has sparked concern from those who live on the road – a 20mph zone.

Donald Thorley, who has lived in Netherlands Avenue for than 50 years with his wife, Averil, said action needed to be taken to tackle the problem of dangerous driving on the street. His car, a Hyundai, was hit in the crash and he said it was likely to be written off.

“It’s an ongoing problem of speeding and the volume of traffic,” said Mr Thorley.

“Locals seem to obey the 20mph limit, but others go past at 40mph. We were shocked. If we had been in the car, we would not be here today.”

Mr Thorley said he had been sitting in his chair reading a paper when he heard a crash outside.

“I looked outside to see two cars on the grass verge, smashed up.”

He said he believed the BMW crashed into one car, which then spun around and hit his car.

The couple said it was a miracle that nobody was hurt or killed.

“It’s a residents’ road, it’s a wide road and because of that, people think they can zoom up,” they said.

They would now like to see the top of the road closed completely, to secure it as an access road.

Councillor Ralph Berry (Lab, Wibsey) said he and other councillors were waiting for full details from the police, but it seemed the BMW had been travelling at “some speed” prior to the collision.

“The councillors will be looking for reports on what measures can be taken,” he said.

“The fundamental problem is short-tempered, aggressive driving. This should not have been possible if you were driving at 20mph on an access road.

“Residents are looking for what we can do about this – it’s alluding to people wanting the top of the road closed again. We need to have a serious look at what measures can be taken.”

He added that the road had been a problem for decades, but this was one of the worst incidents he had seen.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “Police are investigating a collision in Netherlands Avenue involving a black BMW and two parked vehicles. No injuries were reported.”

Anyone with information should contact the Safer Roads and Neighbourhood Support team on 101, quoting log 0698 of July 29.
