A FATHER found with two disguised weapons in his Bradford bedroom has been jailed for two and a half years.

When searching the home of Mubasher Ali, 40, in June last year, police found a Taser made to look like an iPhone and a stun gun that resembled a black torch.

Ali had pleaded guilty to two charges of possessing a disguised firearm prior to yesterday’s sentencing hearing at Bradford Crown Court.

Prosecutor Chloe Hudson said that on June 3 last year, police stopped a car in which Ali was a passenger and subsequently arrested him.

When later searching his home in Great Horton Road, officers discovered the Taser in a box in his bedroom and the torch in a wardrobe.

After the “very convincing looking” items were taken away for analysis, a police forensics expert applied a charge to both devices and found that they were in working order.

“These were fully functioning weapons that were capable of being operated,” said Miss Hudson.

Simon Nichol, for Ali, said the currents generated by the items were “very low”, meaning they were “not likely to be lethal” but could have caused “temporary incapacitation”.

He said Ali had bought the devices while in Turkey “as a bit of a toy” and had not realised they were illegal.

He added that there was no charger for the items, which he said Ali had never used or taken out of the house.

Mr Nichol said that any prison sentence would have a significant effect on Ali’s wife and children, and his car valeting business, through which he employed three staff.

He described Ali as a “good father, a good husband, and a good member of society.”

Mr Nichol said the exceptional circumstances of the case, with evidence of the “non-lethal” nature of the weapons, justified a sentence “significantly lower” than the mandatory minimum five-year jail term, and Judge Jonathan Durham Hall QC said he was “just persuaded” to pass a shorter sentence.

But jailing Ali for 30 months, he said: “Those weapons were functional and the experts could make them work.

“This court cannot ignore the potential dangers.”
