A RECENT exhibition at Cartwright Hall art gallery attracted almost 30,000 visitors.

The Splendours of the Subcontinent: A Prince’s Tour of India 1875-6 ran from March to June, and in that time around 29,500 people visited the free exhibition.

It included 70 Indian works of art from the Royal Collection, including crowns ceremonial weapons and other artefacts, and told the story of the grand tour of the Indian subcontinent made by the Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII.

On his trip the prince met nearly 100 rulers and was presented with gifts produced using renowned Indian techniques.

The exhibition had been developed in collaboration with Bradford Council’s Museums and Galleries Service and Royal Collection Trust, and offered visitors a rare glimpse of artefacts that have rarely been open to public view.

The touring exhibition was considered one of the Lister Park gallery’s blockbuster events, and Bradford was the only Northern city to host it.
