A PEDESTRIAN rescued after being trapped under a lorry has had one of his legs amputated below the knee, his family has reported on Facebook.

Emergency services were called to the incident in Norman Lane, Eccleshill, just before 10am today.

The 65-year-old, named locally as John Smith, was freed by fire crews from Shipley and Bradford, along with the technical rescue unit from Cleckheaton.

He was taken to Leeds General Infirmary by ambulance with what West Yorkshire Police originally described as injuries to his foot.

Earlier tonight the man's daughter, Joanne Brannan, from Shipley, was reporting on her Facebook page that her father was out of surgery and that the operation had gone well.

She said he had only gone out in the morning to get his paper.

One man Ryan Hardaker has already started a crowdfunding appeal to try and raise £500 to help towards rehabilitation.

"This is going to be a long hard road to recovery" said Mr Hardaker on his Justgiving page at justgiving.com/crowdfunding/ryan-hardaker.

Ms Brennan said on her Facebook: "Bless this lad, helping raise money for dad to make his life easier! He's now out of theatre and is stable just praying for a good strong recovery now and lots of rehabilitation to get used to not having his leg which he's had for 65 years! Come on dad, you are a fighter!!! Xxx"

Police have now issued an appeal for witnesses to the collision, confirming that the man suffered "serious" injuries.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101 quoting log 561 of Friday, July 21.
