THERE was a standing ovation even before the first act was over when dazzling musical La Cage Aux Folles opened at the Alhambra this week.
The show, based on a French farce, is about Georges, owner of a St Tropez nightclub and his partner, Albin, the club's star drag act. When Georges’ son announces he’s marrying the daughter of a politician who wants the decadent nightclub closed down, the couple try to hide their vibrant lifestyle.
“This show asks what it means to be a mother. It’s essentially about family,” said actor John Partridge, who plays Albin and alter ego, Zara. His powerful performance of I Am What I Am, a highlight of the show, had audience members on their feet. “To sing that every night is a joy,” he said. “Seeing people respond so passionately is heartwarming.”
The show also stars American actor Adrian Zmed as Georges, and musical theatre legend Marti Webb as the couple’s friend, Jacqueline.
