THE sister of murdered MP Jo Cox has praised the public for getting together in her memory.

Kim Leadbeater described people’s efforts to celebrate the life of the former Batley & Spen MP – and spread her More In Common message – as “truly remarkable”.

Ms Leadbeater is also rallying support for cyclists who will be embarking on a journey from the Spenborough Track in Liversedge to the Houses of Parliament later this month, stopping off at communities along the way to inspire even more community spirit.

Organisers are hoping a huge turnout from the public will give the team a good send-off on Wednesday, July 26, and that they will be cheered along the route until the end of the challenge on July 30.

The event will be the last big occasion of the summer for the initiative, said Ms Leadbeater.

There will be entertainment at the track for families and friends from 9am onwards. There will also be the opportunity for adults and children to ride their bikes on the track.

Mrs Cox was murdered in Birstall on June 16 last year by Thomas Mair.

Last month a number of Great Get Together events took place to support Mrs Cox’s message that people have “more in common” than that which divides them.

In City Park, Bradford Council held a picnic and fun day with music, games and activities and in the evening a spiritual Big Iftar was held to mark the breaking of fast during Ramadan. Elsewhere in the district, a picnic in the park for local families was held at The Green in Heckmondwike, the town where Mrs Cox was raised and educated.

All Saints CE Primary School in Little Horton also held a street party in Kennion Street, and the Friends of Ilkley Lido hosted a community picnic at the outdoor pool.

Now Ms Leadbeater is asking organisers of any of those events to get in touch with feedback and reflections to document what has already been achieved and to help secure more financial support to keep up the work.

“This will work in several ways – partly to serve as a beautiful record for ourselves, but also to show the generous people who have already provided financial support what we have achieved so far, and then to use the results to apply for further sponsorship and funding going forward,” she said.
