A TENANT has told of her nightmare ordeal after raw sewage - including human faeces - flooded into her bathroom sink and bath.

The sewage first appeared on Monday but it took social housing provider Places for People until yesterday afternoon to unblock an external drain which caused the problem.

Marie Brophy, 56, was left having to wash in her kitchen sink and urinate in a jug.

Ms Brophy, of Truncliffe, Wibsey, said she first noticed the blockage as she was running a bath on Monday.

She said: “All this stuff started coming up through the plughole and overflow hole. Then yesterday it started coming through the sink.

"It kept coming back up and under the bath looks like a swamp, I’ve had to throw away six bath towels I used to try to mop it up.

“I have angina, epilepsy and asthma and this has really affected my health, the whole house stinks. My neighbour came to look and was almost sick from the smell.”

Ms Brophy has only been in her home for five weeks and had the bathroom flooring and wallpaper replaced.

“I feel badly let down by Places for People,” she said. “It’s their job as a housing association to look after the health and wellbeing of their tenants.

“I have barely ate it’s making me feel so unwell, without my friends I don’t think I would have been able to cope.”

Workmen visited her home yesterday and unblocked an outdoor drain, which also drained the bath, but some excrement was still left in her sink.

But Ms Brophy said she will have to wait until Monday for her bath to be taken out, allowing the remaining mess underneath and the bathroom flooring to be cleared away.

A Places for People spokesman said: “We understand the inconvenience this must have caused, which is why we have acted quickly in response to the plumbing issues reported.

“On Tuesday a member of our repairs team attended the property in order to fix a drainage issue, and then again on Wednesday when the issue reoccurred.

“After neither treatment proved successful, we sent our specialist sewerage contractors to the property yesterday and we understand the issue has now been resolved.

“Our maintenance team will now focus on repairing any damage caused."
