TOWN councillors will consider a proposal to give a £5,000 grant to Keighley Show.

The proposal will be presented at the latest full meeting of Keighley Town Council next Thursday. (June 29)

A recommendation for this grant will be put forward by the council's own Finance and Audit committee, which discussed an application from Keighley Show at its meeting earlier this month.

The application had been presented at a committee meeting in April, but it was agreed to defer a decision until further financial information had been received.

William Mitchell, chairman of Keighley Show, said: "The show is Keighley's premier event, but last year we were badly affected by the weather, and that cost us £7,000.

"It cost us £39,000 to put the show on last year and we only made £32,000 back.

"We're trying to grow the show and make improvements and it's hard to do so with losses like that.

"With this application for sponsorship we're hoping to work with Keighley Town Council to promote Keighley's finest event.

"The money would be a great help to us and would enable us to put on even better attractions."

This year's Keighley Show takes place on Saturday September 2 at the Marley Playing Fields, and will feature livestock, horses, small animals, alongside horticulture, handicraft, arts & crafts, produce and much more.

There will also be children's entertainments, catering outlets and a wide variety of trade stands, plus a selection of exhibitions and displays taking place during the course of the day. Visit keighleyshow.co.uk for more details.
