FIREFIGHTERS have warned the public of the dangers of using barbecues indoors after being called out to a Bradford home last night.

At around 9pm a crew from Odsal and one from Cleckheaton were called to Aberdeen Place, Lidget Green after a resident reported smoke coming from his cellar.

When they investigated, they found that the smoke had actually seeped into the property from a neighbouring house. Firefighters went next door and found that a family was using a gas barbecue to cook food in their cellar.

They advised the family of the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Odsal crew commander Ahsan Ali said: "We advised the family of the safety hazards of barbecuing indoors. If they hadn't stopped they might not have woken up in the morning due to carbon monoxide poisoning.

"People should be much more careful when they use a barbecue."

Cleckheaton crew commander Michael Smith added: "You just can't have a barbecue in the house, if it doesn't cause a fire than the carbon monoxide can still kill you.

"The family couldn't see anything wrong in what they were doing, they didn't have any clue the smoke could kill them."
