BRIGHOUSE will be stepping back in time to the 1940s as residents and visitors alike celebrate the town’s vintage weekend.

Organised by Brighouse Business Initiative, the event is back for a fifth year, and more than 50,000 visitors are expected over the weekend.

There will be nostalgia a-plenty with vintage musical entertainment, a Spitfire and Hurricane fighter flypast, displays of vintage vehicles and fashions and big band entertainment.

David Tankard, of the BBI, said: “The event just gets bigger and bigger every year.

“We are getting a lot more stalls, vintage vehicles and people attending and more inquiries from tour operators bringing coaches full of day-trippers to our event, which is really putting Brighouse on the map.”

The weekend kicks off tonight with a theatre performance of the heartwarming play Goodnight Mr Tom. It tells the tale of a wartime evacuee from London and takes place at Brighouse Civic Hall, with two further performances tomorrow.

Tomorrow the centre of Brighouse will be closed to traffic as the town is filled with market stalls and exhibitions and hundreds of re-enactors will turn the clock back with living history demonstrations including Land Army girls, RAF officers and other iconic figures from the 1940s as well as a special visit from a Winston Churchill look-alike.

One of the highlights of the day will be the flypast by the RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, which is scheduled for 3.30pm.

A German WWII assault gun from the Yorkshire Wartime Experience and a replica Messerschmitt fighter plane will also be on display.

A dance event is taking place tomorrow evening, when the Ashby Big Band is playing at the town’s Assembly Rooms from 7.30pm.

Tomorrow evening’s entertainment continues until 9pm with a real ale bar, hot food, music and dancing.

There is also full programme of events on Sunday, ending at around 4pm.

Tickets for Goodnight Mr Tom and the Ashby Big Band are available online and further information is also available from brighouse1940sweekend.co.uk.
