A BRADFORD gym is gearing up to host a mammoth fundraising event in honour of one of its most popular members.

The owners of Legends Gym, at Black Dyke Mills in Queensbury, have organised a Power Pedal charity bikeathon next month in aid of the Anthony Nolan Trust, which helps save the lives of those affected by blood cancer, and the Make a Wish Foundation, which grants wishes to seriously ill children in the UK.

The event is being supported by the family of long-term gym member David Pearson, 55, who is currently fighting lymphoma.

The 24-hour bikeathon will be split over three days from Friday, June 9, to Sunday, June 11, with teams of up to 12 people taking part.

Karen and Anna Hollands, the owners of Legends, said: “This a great way to engage with our local community and raise vital funds for two great causes dealing with issues that have touched most families.

“David is a long-term and very popular member at Legends. He is well-liked and respected by all who attend and work here.

“Recently, he has been bravely fighting one of his toughest battles against cancer. Dave trains like a Trojan in the gym and is using the same mindset to fight off the cancer. Inspired by his courage and determination, we are holding the Legends Power Pedal.”

The winning team will be presented with their prizes and trophy by the 11-times World’s Strongest Man finalist Mark Felix, and there will also be an award for the team with the most sponsorship for the charities.

The final day of the challenge will also mark the relaunch of the gym, with an event including DJs, graffiti artists, food from Rustica Pizza, and competitions including a bench-off and boxing machine punch.

Anyone is welcome to attend, and the gym is seeking donations from local businesses to go towards a raffle being held on the day.

Mr Pearson’s two daughters, Nicola, 22, and Rachel, 21, said their dad, who was diagnosed 18 months ago and is currently undergoing chemotherapy, would be taking part in the challenge if he was well enough to do so.

They said: “This event means such a lot to him. The gym is his pride and joy. He loves it, he lives in his Legends jumper.

“He’s wanting to take part in the cycle, but his days are hit and miss. Even if he can’t take part, he’ll definitely be here.”
