A PRIMARY school has helped raise over £1,300 for the hospice that cared for one of its former pupils.

Muhammed Abubakr Shazad, known as Abubakr, was cared for at Martin House Hospice before his death from a brain tumour on January 29, aged just eight.

Last month Southmere Primary School held a superhero themed day at the school to honour his memory and raise money for the hospice.

On the day pupils dressed as superheroes as well as making cards to give to Martin House, and Abubakr’s family helped staff with a coffee morning and raffle with prizes donated by local businesses.

Chris Verney from Martin House visited the school earlier this month to collect a cheque for £1,321, the amount that had been collected on the fundraising day.

Vice Principal, Joanne Kershaw said: "As a school, we are extremely proud of our families and community for raising such a fantastic amount of money for Martin House.

"We enjoyed an assembly on the theme of charity and Chris Verney from Martin House talked about how our money would go towards helping young people and adults with serious health needs.

"Martin House is very important to us and we know we will continue to support them in any way we can. The family of Abubakr are grateful for all of the support they received while at the hospice and beyond at such a difficult time."
