A TROPICAL flavour was added to lunchtime at Oakworth Primary School.

Hawaiian-style food was served up and the catering team ditched its aprons for traditional costumes.

The children enjoyed barbecued chicken with rice and vegetable kebabs, followed by a tropical fruit salad.

"We have been trying out new ways to make lunchtimes a more enjoyable learning experiences for pupils," said catering manager, Kirsty McAndrew.

"To promote healthy eating and encourage the children to try new foods, we have introduced monthly 'theme days'.

"Pupils are introduced to foods from different parts of the world – such as Mexico, China, America and France – or food which represents special times of the year, like Christmas and Hallowe'en.

"The Hawaiian Day was a huge success."
