READERS of the Telegraph & Argus have told us why they trust the paper as their source of local news to mark Local Newspaper Week.

The campaign aims to show the role that the local press plays in its community, and the power of local newspapers to campaign for positive change.

As part of the campaign, the T&A asked readers what it is they value about the newspaper.

Saira Jabeen, 43, said she likes the T&A as its stories are based in the community.

Ms Jabeen, from Thornbury, said: “I like the T&A because it shares lots of community stories and has an interest in what people are doing. If you are doing a charity event or something to regenerate the city, the T&A gives you coverage.

“It has the community at its heart, the paper is really behind Bradford City as we’ve seen during the play-offs this year, and its reporters are all really approachable and easy to contact.”

Chris Nelson and Andy Deighton, members of Bradford Cycling Club, also praised the T&A for its community focus. Mr Nelson, 47, from Undercliffe, and Mr Deighton, 46, from Harrogate, said they were particularly impressed with our coverage of their Bradford-Roubaix ride. Mr Deighton said: “When we finished the response was fantastic, there was a photographer there waiting for us.

“Being from Harrogate, looking at Bradford from the outside it always seemed to have a bad reputation, but since coming to the city the work the T&A does and activities happening here are really putting Bradford on the map.”

Mr Nelson added: “It shows that the paper covers what the city cares about and is interested in.”

Suzanne Watson, managing director of Ilkley-based Approach PR, also backed the T&A. She added:“As long as there are local issues, there must be a local newspaper at the heart of the community. We are fortunate in Bradford to have the longevity and integrity of the T&A. For decades they have told the story of our evolving district and campaigned for social change. But it’s down to us to sustain our demand and appetite for this quality, trusted, local news. Our community needs the professionalism offered by local journalists and we need to support the continuation of this invaluable local voice.”
