PUPILS from a Bradford school and officers from West Yorkshire Police were out on the streets over the weekend as part of a new partnership programme.

The group of students for Hanson Academy in Swain House learnt about a day in the life of a police officer as part of the Partners and Communities Together (PACT) programme.

It was led by PC Kate Edwards, who works in the Bolton and Undercliffe ward.

During the weekend the students went on patrol with officers around the streets of Swain House, performing speed checks on drivers using speed guns, and wrote down the details of vehicles that were breaking the speed limit.

These drivers will be sent a warning letter by police regarding their poor driving.

The PACT programme was being delivered to students as part of their coursework at Hanson Academy.

Councillor Michael Stelling (Lib Dem, Bolton and Undercliffe) joined the students during the patrol.

He said: “It’s absolutely wonderful seeing Hanson students working with local police, seeing first-hand what police officers have to go through on a daily basis.

“The students were introduced to various aspects of police work throughout the weekend.

“I caught up with them at Swain House where students were working with the handheld speed gun and recording those drivers that broke the speed limit.

“We all know that speeding is a big issue across the district and this is no different in Bolton and Undercliffe.

“I was very surprised how quickly the students were filling their log sheets with offending drivers.

“Even with Operation Steerside, and the Stop the Danger Drivers campaign in the Telegraph & Argus, the message surprisingly is still not getting through to drivers not to speed.

“Just with my day-to-day driving around Bradford I see some crazy and outright dangerous actions performed by drivers, this simply needs to stop and cannot be tolerated.

“It’s great that these students see first-hand the problems which this district is facing, in various aspects of police work.”

Other police activities the students took part in included handing out protective screws to vehicle owners, which make stealing vehicle registration plates more difficult.
