A POLICE operation to cut down on nuisance bikes led to a 75 per cent drop in reports of anti social riders.

The operation was carried out by police in the Batley and Spen area, including Birstall, over the course of 20 days.

West Yorkshire Police carried it out after numerous complaints from people in these areas about nuisance and off-road bikes being used on the district's roads.?

During the 20 days of the operation eight bikes were seized, 11 Section 59 warnings were issued and four people were reported for summons.?

At the start of the operation, on April 10, there were 80 calls from members of the public reporting nuisance bikes and quads on the road. While it was running, the calls reduced by around 75 per cent. ?

Sergeant Chris Field, of Batley and Spen NPT, who led the operation, said: "This operation was solely focused on tackling the use of off-road and nuisance bikes on the towns road and we are incredibly pleased with the results.

"I intend to extend this operation throughout the coming months and urge anyone who has information regarding the use of off-road bikes or anti-social behaviour to contact the police. We would especially like any details or descriptions of the riders themselves, the bikes and the locations to assist with our enquiries to tackle this issue.

"There are safe and lawful ways for people to enjoy their hobby, we hope that the steps we are taking will reassure residents that we will not tolerate their use on the roads when it is to the detriment of other people trying to enjoy their evenings and weekends in peace and safety."
