POLICE investigating a violent hammer attack on an elderly woman in Cleckheaton have made an arrest. 

A 54-year-old Cleckheaton man was arrested on suspicion of robbery after the 76-year-old woman was hit on the head with a hammer and had her purse stolen.

He has been released and inquiries remain ongoing.

She was attacked when she was walking on the Spen Valley Greenway on Monday, May 8. She was approached from behind by a man shortly after she passed Tesco's supermarket. 

The woman was taken to hospital for treatment and remained there overnight but is now recovering at home.

The investigation is being carried out by Kirklees CID and an e-fit of the suspect was released earlier this week.
