A BRADFORD charity worker has been recognised for her work looking at Muslim women in the prison system.

Sofia Buncy, from Muslim Hands UK won an Asian Women of Achievement Award at a ceremony in London yesterday.

Her ground-breaking report, Muslim Women in Prison: Second Chance-Fresh Horizons looked at needs and challenges facing female prisoners in custody and after release.

She had been nominated in the Social and Humanitarian category of the awards, which recognise the achievements of Asian women across the country.

Her work had been delivered by the Huddersfield Pakistani Community Alliance, and particularly looked at the lives of women in HMP New Hall and HMP Askham Grange.

HMP New Hall’s governor, Susan Howard, has said: “The service has surpassed our expectations supporting both individual women and informing local and national policy.

“Sofia has led the project from the start and been absolutely inspirational in her work and achievements.”
