THE Conservative and Liberal Democrat groups on Bradford Council have assembled their top teams for the year ahead, after holding their annual meetings yesterday.

The opposition Conservatives re-elected leader Councillor Simon Cooke, deputy leader Councillor John Pennington and chief whip Councillor Mike Ellis, who were all unopposed.

Cllr Cooke said his group would now focus on holding the ruling Labour group's "feet to the fire" as the official opposition. He said they would also be gearing up for the 2018 local election, when they aimed to win enough seats to remove Labour from overall control.

Meanwhile, the Liberal Democrats re-elected leader Councillor Jeanette Sunderland and elected new deputy leader Councillor Geoff Reid and chief whip Brendan Stubbs, who were all unopposed.

Cllr Sunderland said in the coming year they hoped to challenge Labour “around the work they say they are doing to lift people out of poverty”.

Labour has already unveiled its top team, with Councillor Susan Hinchcliffe continuing in her second year as leader, Councillor Imran Khan elected unopposed as deputy leader and Councillor Shakeela Lal continuing as chief whip.
