BRADFORD’S City Hall will feature on the small screen tomorrow as key scenes in a new television drama were filmed in the historic building.

The main council chamber doubles as the House of Commons in King Charles III, the BBC Two adaption of Mike Bartlett’s award-winning play.

Prince Charles – portrayed by the late Tim Pigott-Smith – has waited a lifetime to ascend to the throne. But after the Queen’s death he finds himself wrestling his conscience over a bill to sign into law.

His hesitation detonates a constitutional and political crisis and divides his family, with William and Kate realising his actions may threaten their future.

With the Monarchy’s future under threat, protests on the streets and his family in disarray, Charles must grapple with his identity and purpose, to decide whether the Crown still has any real power.

Scenes for the drama, which airs tomorrow at 9pm, were filmed in Bradford in December, with Bradford Council hiring out part of the building to the production team.

David Wilson, director of Bradford UNESCO City of film said: “It was a great pleasure to support Drama Republic on this production and see the transformation of the Council Chamber in City Hall, Bradford, into the House of Commons for the day.

“Having worked in and out of City Hall for the past decade it was quite a shock to go from initial planning stages to see the finished results and I can’t wait to see it on TV.”

Figures revealed by the Telegraph & Argus earlier this month showed that the historic City Hall building had been used as a backdrop for TV dramas and soaps seven times in the last year. As well as King Charles III, Channel 4 drama National Treasure, ITV drama DCI Banks, and ITV soap Emmerdale were also filmed there in the last 12 months.

In addition the cast and crew of hit BBC drama Peaky Blinders were spotted a few weeks ago filming on the prominent City Hall steps.

Mr Wilson added “It was as a result of the Charles III production that we also began discussions with crew members who were then going on to work on Peaky Blinders who also used City Hall recently and will be back in the city in the coming months to film more of series four.”
