MORE than 1,000 runners got under starters orders today for Bradford's annual Race for Life fundraiser for Cancer Research UK.

Crowds gathered to cheer on the contestants at Lister Park which became a sea of pink as females of all ages ran, jogged or walked along the 5km course.

Ahead of the race, a minute's silence was held to remember those who had lost their lives to cancer.

This year's winner was 13-year-old Grace Dawson, of Bingley, who was running with Bradford Grammar School's team.

She finished in 19 minutes and five seconds, 27 seconds faster than last year when she also crossed the finishing line first.

In second place was 11-year-old Rebecca Flaherty, also of Bradford Grammar School, who finished in 19 minutes 47 seconds.

In doing so, she mirrored the achievement of her mum, Sarah Flaherty, who was second last year.

Katie Mathers, Cancer Research UK's area event manager, praised all those who took part and said she hoped the event will raise £60,000.

"We've had a brilliant turnout, we've had more than 100 ladies from three temples in Bradford," she said.

"Last year there were 45 of them and this year they wanted to get more than 100 and they've done it.

"We are hoping today's event will make £60,000.

"Everyone has been touched by cancer, everyone here has got a story to tell.

"It's been amazing well done everyone."
