THREE new sports are being added to the mixed ability programme in Bradford.

Mixed ability sport encourages disabled and non-disabled people to take part together in a bid to get more active and enjoy different sport.

New sessions are starting across the city in tennis, bowls and women's only movement and dance. these activities are open to all, regardless of age, experience and ability.

Mark Goodwin, International Mixed Ability Sports founder and director said: “Everyone is welcome at these non-judgemental and fun sessions. They are a great opportunity to try a new sport or return to something you may have played in the past.”

It builds on the established boxing and dance classes which Mixed Ability Sports already runs.

The bowls sessions began yesterday at Fairmount Park in Nab Wood and then take place every Wednesday from 2pm to 4pm.

A total of 14 people attended the first bowls session, with volunteers from Highfield and Silsden bowling clubs playing alongside residents from three Shipley care homes, who have a variety of disabilities.

Volunteer organiser Alan Thornber said: "this is a a great opportunity to get people involved in a competitive sport which they wouldn't ordinarily be able to access. It's a credit to the volunteers that they enjoyed the afternoon so much they want to continue to be involved."

One participant, Trevor Woolhouse, who is severely sighted, said: "Alan the volunteer stood by the jack and spoke to me until I had an idea of the distance I had to bowl. He also gave me good verbal instructions and feedback."

Another, Elizabeth Bals said: "It's wonderful. It's brought people together to enjoy the competition, I've really enjoyed it."

Wheelchair user Darren Griffiths enjoyed his first experience of mixed ability bowls. "It's my first time. I'd like to keep coming and get more experienced."

Tennis sessions are at Heaton Tennis and Squash Club every Sunday from 1pm to 2.30pm starting on Sunday, May 7.

The movement and dance sessions for women will be at Bradford Deaf Centre, Hallfield Road every Tuesday evening from 6pm to 7pm starting on May 9.
