SHOPPERS and staff helped The Broadway shopping centre cycle its way to more than £2,600 during a fundraising event for Bradford Hospitals Children's Charity over the weekend.

As hundreds of cyclists took part in the Tour de Yorkshire, Team Broadway asked people to join them in an attempt to cycle 980km on Saturday and Sunday.

Six exercise bikes were set up the the centre and by 5pm on Sunday, the team had raised £2,687 and hit the target - twice the distance of the tour. A total of 336 cyclists took part and covered between them a distance of 1,158km.

The money raised will contribute to The Broadway’s plan to raise £10,000 for its charity partner throughout 2017.

Ian Ward, general manager of The Broadway, said: "The atmosphere at The Broadway and in Bradford was electric over the weekend, and I’m proud to say that #TeamBroadway went above and beyond their distance target on Saturday and Sunday.

"Everyone was really keen to get involved in the cycling spirit of the weekend, and we were really wowed by the Lord Mayor taking part and showing his support.

"Not only did #TeamBroadway give the other cyclists a run for their money, they also helped us raise more than £2,600 for Bradford Hospitals Children’s Charity. We chose them as our official charity partner because of the invaluable work they do for so many families in the area, and this donation will go a long way to helping them continue providing specialist care to their patients."

Hayley Collis, fundraiser for Bradford Hospital Children’s Charity said: "We are incredibly grateful to The Broadway for choosing us as their partner charity and all their fundraising efforts too.

"As the new Children’s Ward within the new hospital wing at Bradford is now open and in use, the fundraising will be used to provide all those special “little extras” which make a stay in hospital as comfortable as possible, as well as superb play, rest and therapy facilities."
