FIREFIGHTERS have dealt with the fourth blaze at an empty school since the start of the year.

Crews were called to the former Yorkshire Martyrs school on Westgate Hill Street, next to Tong High School, at 8.15pm yesterday.

The fire was in an classroom building separate from the main building.  Three engines, two from Bradford and one from Odsal, were at the scene for about an hour and a half to stop the fire from spreading.

Firefighters said there was still some school paraphernalia in the building, including filing cabinets filled with blank exam papers.

The blaze is being treated as suspicious.

The school has been a hot spot for fires in recent months. Five fire crews spent hours tackling a blaze there on April 18, and there had previously been fires on March 9, which started in the school’s gymnasium, and on February 8.

The former Roman Catholic school closed in 2010 after a re-structuring by the Leeds Catholic Diocese. The diocese was given permission to demolish the buildings in 2015, but before they were torn down, the site was sold to Liversedge based Apollo Beds Ltd.
