POLICE have praised the atmosphere of the million-plus crowds that flocked to enjoy the Tour de Yorkshire over the weekend, confirming that not a single arrest was made in West Yorkshire.
Tens of thousands lined the route as it weaved through the Bradford district from its starting point of Centenary Square, before huge numbers also gathered as the race headed through Calderdale and Kirklees to its finish at Fox Valley, Sheffield.
Superintendent Pat Casserly, of West Yorkshire Police, said: “The spotlight has been on Yorkshire and our fantastic county has been showcased to an international audience. We estimate that one million people have turned out to watch the Tour in West Yorkshire. At present, we haven’t made one Tour-related arrest and that’s due in part to the great atmosphere generated across the route.”
Race organisers said yesterday that 2.2 million had lined the three-day route, praising fans for their “unparalleled support”.
