A MORRISONS customer has criticised the supermarket chain for letting a recycling bay in one of its car parks get so full it has encouraged fly-tipping and created an eyesore.

However, the Bradford-based company has said it is equally distressed over the fly-tipping at the Girlington store and - as the site is Bradford Council-run - has pressed the Council to clear it.

A customer of Morrisons has provided photographs to the Telegraph & Argus taken recently showing overflowing recycling containers at the supermarket’s car park, where not only the intended recyclables have been left, but also random items such as a large plastic container, cardboard, carpet-type debris and a mattress.

The customer, 67, who asked not to be named, said the site was a disgrace and he had approached the store manager.

“He told me he was aware of the build-up of rubbish and said he had phoned and e-mailed the Council on several occasions to get the Council to move the rubbish.”

A Morrisons spokesman said: “Clearly, none of us want fly-tipping at our store so we are installing extra security to prevent it.

“The Council run it but it’s on Morrisons property. We’re working with the Council.”

A Bradford Council spokesman said the Council tries to encourage the provision of a number of recycling sites around the district.

He said: “At this site the Council is responsible for emptying the can and plastic receptacles, which are emptied every week.

“Other recycling receptacles are emptied directly by various recycling merchants.

“The last time they were emptied was April 21 and they were not full at the time.

“We believe that problems are caused by the illegal dumping of large amounts of glass.

“If fly-tipping has been reported to Bradford Council, we will arrange removal if on Council land, or work with the landowner if on private land.

“If the necessary evidence can be obtained - such as vehicle registration numbers - Bradford Council can take action against those responsible.

Fly-tipping can be reported to the Council on 01274 434366 or online at bradford.gov.uk.”

Surveillance to be stepped up to oust fly-tipping at supermarket car park
