CROSSFLATTS Village ended the league season on a high with a fantastic 4-3 win at newly-crowned league champions Sky Bet and secured second place in the league in the process, which is the highest the club have ever finished in the Wharfedale Triangle League.

Sky Bet claimed the Premier Division crown last Thursday with a hard-fought 1-0 home win against Shipley Town and wanted to finish the season on a high – but Kevin Gill’s side had other ideas, as they kept their recent good form going with another high-quality win, with the goals coming from Colin Schofield (2), Michael Garnett and a class free-kick from man-of-the-match Ollie Metcalfe.

Village’s attention will now turn to the Keighley Cup final on May 7 at Silsden AFC when they face Bradford Sunday Alliance Side Bradford Phoenix in a re-run of last year’s final that Village won 2-1.

Manager Kevin Gill said: “We have been unbelievable in the last three weeks. Not many would have predicted that we would have got nine points and scored 12 goals against the three top teams.

"I'm proud of every single one of my players. We now need to keep this run going in the (Keighley Cup) final. The team morale is class at the minute and we are going into the final with great confidence.

“The game was very open and it was 3-3 after 20 minutes due to some slack defending from us. Thankfully our strikers were on form and they kept us in the game.

"Colin Schofield struck twice and was a threat all game with his pace, then Garnett kept his good run going with another goal.”

"Things were all square on the hour mark when we won a free kick 25 yards out. Ollie Metcalfe struck a beautiful free-kick, reminiscent of Roberto Carlos’ effort against France all those years ago. The bend was unreal and he stuck the ball straight in the stanchion.

"It was an amazing free-kick and worthy of winning any game. I'm extremely proud of the lads this season. To finish the season with three great wins against Keighley Town, Yeadon Vets and Sky Bet – the players have to take great credit.”
