A BUILDING firm is celebrating a triple success at an awards ceremony, including honours for one of its apprentices.

Mitton Group, based in Cleckheaton Road, Low Moor, Bradford, won three prizes at the BESA (Building Engineering Services Association) Yorkshire Regional Awards.

The company won the employer training initiative of the year award.

And Tom Connor, 23, secured the heating and ventilation apprentice of the year and the employer training initiative of the year awards.

Mr Connor has worked for the Mitton Group for the last five years and is in the third year of his four-year apprenticeship course in welding and pipe fitting at the Leeds College of Building.

He was not able to attend the awards ceremony in Harrogate and had to find out that he had won from work colleagues.

As part of the prize for his double win he received a set of drills for use in his daily job.

Mr Connor, of Sheffield, admitted he was shocked to learn of his successes.

“I did not expect to win at all. I was over the moon when I found out," he said.

Mr Connor said his job also gives him the chance to work across the UK.

He added: “I do two weeks solid at college and then I do eight to ten weeks working away.

“I have been over the country doing the job, from Scotland to Kent. I really enjoy it.

“My dad Paul also works for Mitton Group.”

The Mitton Group was set up more than 70 years ago and it employs 300 people across the UK, with more than half of them working in Bradford.

The company is also one of the shirt sponsors for Bradford City.

Jack Dinnewell, of Ilkley-based building services group NG Bailey, was highly commended in the heating and ventilation apprentice of the year award, narrowly missing out to Mr Connor.

Paul Falkingham, also of NG Bailey, was named level four apprentice of the year.
