A KEIGHLEY organisation formed 17 years ago to promote community cohesion is looking to expand its work.

Keighley Interfaith Group – born out of a Millennium celebration at Cougar Park in July, 2000 – plans to up the frequency of some of its activities.

And it intends introducing new ventures designed to further break down cultural and religious barriers.

"This year we are hoping to hold more events and meetings and are open to suggestions," said a group spokesman.

"Also, we would like to hear from any other organisations which would like us to become involved in their work with regards to interfaith issues.

"At present we are looking at how we can work with The Feast, a Christian charity working to promote community cohesion between young people of different faiths and cultures.

"And members would be available to give talks about our faiths within Keighley and the surrounding area."

In its formative days the group launched a Walk for Friendship, and a faith walk still takes place annually.

Last year's event took in St Anne's RC Church, the Spencer Street and Temple Street mosques and Buddha Land, where tea and cakes were served.

There was a guided tour of each building and participants learned about the history of the venues and the forms of worship.

Other activities have included a peace and reconciliation meeting – with a focus on Syria – at All Saints' Church in Highfield, and a friendship meal at the Balti House, Keighley.

The group's next event is another peace and reconciliation gathering, at Keighley Shared Church Hall on Saturday, June 17, 2pm to 3.15pm, followed by the annual general meeting.

"With all the atrocities in our world today we need time and space to reflect on what we can do to help in these situations," said the spokesman.

"The event is open to people of all faiths and denominations and those of no faith.

"New members are welcome and people are invited to bring along their suggestions for future interfaith events."
