A WOMAN will run the London Marathon in aid of a Bradford-based charity that supports disabled people.

Mandy Sawyer, of Ben Rhydding, near Ilkley, is tackling the 26.2 miles this Sunday to raise money and awareness for Bradford PHAB (Physically Handicapped and Able Bodied).

The charity - which has a base in West Bowling and is part of a national initiative - runs a variety of activities for disabled people, including trips to the seaside, parks and the zoo.

Mandy, 45, said: “I am running for PHAB, a national charity which supports social activities and sports for children and young people with disabilities – they have local clubs across Yorkshire, including Bradford, Leeds and York.

“This is a really worthwhile cause!”

She added: “I feel really passionate about sport and activities for young people of all abilities. I think it is really important in building confidence.

“I am really thrilled and honoured to be running for PHAB because I think it is such an important charity.. It is all based on volunteers and donations.”

Mandy, who will be supported by partner Carl and son Callum, is aiming to raise at least £1,650 for PHAB.

She was asked by her colleague, Akbar Khan, who is chairman of Bradford PHAB, to raise funds for the charity.

“I have always wanted to do the London Marathon and I had put my name in the ballot a few times,” said Mandy.

“Then Akbar approached me and asked if I would be interested in running for PHAB.

“He has been helping me with my fundraising.”

Mandy said she started running about six years ago and had done half-marathons and 10km runs.

She added: “I am slightly anxious. I have never done a marathon before.

“The training is going really well. I have been running four days a week, up to 16 and 22 miles.

“It is a bit of both for me. I am excited because I know it is going to be quite an emotional day, with lots of people running for things they are passionate about, and all the crowds.

“So I am looking forward to it, but I am slightly anxious about the distance.

“Everyone tells you that when you are there on the day and caught up in the excitement of it all, that you are OK.”

PHAB chairman Akbar said: “Mandy’s going to run and raise funds for the wonderful Bradford PHAB, an absolutely amazing charity!

“Many thanks from us all at the club for all the support so far. It means so much to us.”

PHAB has been open in Bradford since 1972 and Akbar is keen to attract new members.

Mr Khan said: “I know there are lots of parents out there looking for somewhere to send their child.”
