KEIGHLEY householders are being warned to be on their guard against opportunist thieves.

Police say the onset of lighter evenings and warmer weather traditionally sparks a rise in sneak-in burglaries, as criminals take advantage of open windows and unlocked doors.

West Yorkshire crime prevention officer, Chris Joyce, says there are simple steps people can take to help reduce their chances of becoming a victim.

"People spend more time in the garden and leave their home unprotected during spring and summer," he said.

"It can take just 60 seconds for burglars to get into your home and steal your belongings, but you can help prevent this by making it more difficult for them by removing opportunities they may look for.

"Crime prevention doesn't need to cost huge sums of money.

"Simply locking your doors, shutting your windows and not leaving valuables on display can make a great difference."

The force has recruited children to help promote the anti-burglary message.

Youngsters are starring in videos reminding householders how to protect their property.

A poster campaign has also been launched.
