Northern Rail staff are staging another walkout today (Friday April 28) in a row about driver-only trains.

Members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) union walked out after talks failed to break the deadlocked dispute.

Sharon Keith, Regional Director at Northern, said: “The morning peak passed without incident and, thanks to the revised timetable, we were able to help our customers get where they needed to be.

“We are now concentrating on getting people home this evening and afternoon. Any customers who want to travel later today on a Northern service should think carefully about their plans. Our services will begin to wind down from later afternoon, and there will be few trains running after 7pm.”

The company said it is running 40% of its usual services today and warned that those services that are not cancelled will be busier than usual. Passengers are advised to leave extra time to travel.

Ms Keith added: “I’d like to thank our customers for their patience so far today, and ask that they continue to work with us as we head into the bank holiday weekend. I’d also like to thank our staff who continue to work hard to operate our trains and look after our customers.”
