A MAN was taken to hospital with a head injury after a “disturbance” in Bradford city centre that has been branded “absolutely shocking.”

The incident, in the early hours of this morning, led to a major junction in the city’s West End being cordoned off by police for more than eight hours.

Officers stood guard to protect a cordon that had been set up in Chester Street, which was shut in both directions while investigations took place.

The police tape was put in place at about 5am and had been removed by about 1.30pm.

Police have revealed that the investigations in Chester Street related to a disturbance that had taken place in nearby Morley Street, in which a 24-year-old man had been injured. A police spokesman said: “The closure at Chester Street related to a report received at about 3.12am about a disturbance in Morley Street, in which a 24-year-old man received a head injury.”

Police said the incident was “believed to have involved” a Volkswagen Golf, which drove off towards Great Horton Road.

“The injured man has been discharged from hospital and has been spoken to by officers,” added the spokesman.

The police spokesman said the car was not used to inflict the injuries.

Councillor Nazam Azam (City, Labour) said the incident was “absolutely shocking”.

He said: “It is not right for anyone to be attacked in this manner. It is unacceptable for this to happen on a main road and I hope whoever is responsible is caught. This is not something that should be happening in my ward.

“I have full confidence in the police to catch those responsible, and I hope a strong message is sent in their punishment.”

Cllr Azam added that he was relieved to hear the injured man’s condition was not serious.
