FILMING has been taking place in Bradford for new BBC drama series Gunpowder, starring Kit Harington.

On location signs have been spotted at Bradford College building Garden Mills, near Thornton Road in Bradford, and it is believed the drama is being filmed inside.

The actor has also been spotted in Saltaire, as scenes for the new three-part production by Kudos for BBC One, are being filmed in the district.

It emerged last month that filming for the same drama had been taking place at Dalton Mills in Keighley.

A set replicating a period building was constructed behind the School Lane mill. And further scenes have reportedly been shot at Oakwell Hall in Birstall.

The programme will tell the story of the infamous Gunpowder Plot attempt to blow up the Houses of Parliament in 1605.

Mr Harington, well-known for his starring role as Jon Snow in the successful fantasy series Game of Thrones, will appear as Robert Catesby, the 30-year-old Warwickshire gentleman who was actually the driving force behind the assassination plot.

He will star alongside Peter Mullan, Mark Gatiss and Liv Tyler, as well as Edward Holcroft, Shaun Dooley, and Tom Cullen.

Diederick Santer, chief executive officer of Kudos said, when the BBC One programme was announced earlier this year: “The Gunpowder Plot is one of the best known stories in Britain and most people are aware of the basic facts.

“But what Ronan has achieved with his page-turning script, and what I hope Kit and Peter and the rest of the magnificent cast will do, is to take the BBC One audience behind the story, into the people, the passion and the politics.

“This will be a hugely engaging drama with a fascinating contemporary resonance, showing the consequences of what can happen when a religious minority is persecuted.”

Piers Wenger, BBC controller drama commissioning, said: “Ronan Bennett’s powerful scripts tells the visceral and resonant story behind the Gunpowder Plot and I couldn’t be more delighted that J Blakeson is on board to direct and that Kit Harington, Peter Mullan, Mark Gatiss and Liv Tyler will star. Gunpowder will be unmissable event television.”

Gunpowder is the latest in a series of filming in Bradford, with ITV soap Emmerdale, and TV dramas Peaky Blinders and DCI Banks, making use of the city as a location.

David Wilson, director of Bradford UNESCO City of Film, said: “There’s not a week goes by where we don’t have an inquiry about filming in Bradford, from feature films to TV dramas, soaps and factual television.

“They don’t always come to fruition, but the Bradford film office has never been busier.

“The majority of shoots are not Bradford-based stories - it’s the amazing architecture that is being used.”
