BRADFORD has been chosen as one of the first locations for a new apprenticeship scheme by global packaging company Essentra.

It has been picked as part of the company’s National Apprenticeship Programme, and will be among seven locations in the UK.

Essentra, a leading global packaging solutions and essential-components company, has operated in Bradford for almost 20 years, providing cartons and leaflets to pharmaceutical and healthcare industries, and is based in Robin Mills, Leeds Road, Greengates.

The first intake of ten apprentices will start work in May, with a further ten beginning work in October.

The apprenticeship will be made up of a selection of vocationally recognised qualifications, as well as technical, functional and soft-skill modules, and will take 36 months to complete.

Candidates will receive training from industry- recognised providers, one-to-one theory-based training onsite, and core skills to help them adapt to a working environment.

They will be offered a competitive salary, with performance-based pay rises on a regular basis.

Once apprentices have successfully finished their training, they are guaranteed a full-time job with Essentra.

Gavin Leathem, group HR director, said: “We very much see this programme as an opportunity for anyone that wants to choose a different path, away from full-time further education at college or university, to continue their studies while learning key skills in a real job from day one.

“Essentra is committed to providing its apprentices with a professional and open working environment, to realise their full potential and enjoy a rewarding and varied career.”

Con Shea, site director in Bradford, said: “We are excited that our site has been chosen to take part in Essentra’s inaugural National Apprenticeship Programme.

“At Bradford, we understand the importance of attracting and inspiring talent - particularly into our skilled operational roles - and believe that this new initiative will help to reinforce our commitment in this respect.

“Essentra is proud of our long-standing presence in Bradford, and we look forward to building on this through our participation in the programme.”
