CHILDREN involved in a weekly literacy Catch Up Club in Undercliffe, Bradford, said goodbye to a long-serving librarian.

The youngsters presented Rashid Hasan, who has worked at St Augustine’s Library for more than 20 years, with a book of children’s letters in recognition of his help over the years.

Mr Hasan has encouraged the children, who take part in the Catch Up Club, to develop their talents and skills.

The club is a joint venture between the library and Dyslexia Action and is free to children in BD3 who are in school years five to 11.

It has been running at the library for more than three years and has helped about 80 children living in an area with some of the poorest educational outcomes in the country.

It allows the youngsters to work on basic phonics, reading, spelling, memory, punctuation and writing skills.

Mr Hasan was also presented with some cakes.

The event also marked the closure of the library, following cuts in Bradford Council funding.

Volunteers hope to reopen it in the summer.
