IT WAS the moment rail enthusiasts had been waiting for as the world’s most famous railway locomotive arrived in the Bradford district.

The Flying Scotsman steam engine looked resplendent in its pristine green livery at Haworth sheds, on the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway, today.

The Doncaster-built A3 class, the first steam locomotive to be officially authenticated at reaching 100mph, was given final preparations this afternoon for tomorrow’s historic trip over the reopened Settle to Carlisle line.

The steam engine is due to leave Oxenhope Station at 8.30am tomorrow. Subsequent times and stations are: Haworth 8.35am, Keighley 9.15am and Skipton 9.45am before the train arrives at Hellifield at 10.08am then departs this station at 10.45am.

It is due to reach Settle Junction at 10.53am. On its return leg later in the day, the locomotive is expected to reach Skipton at 6.44pm, leave Skipton at 7.06pm then get to Keighley at 7.20pm, Haworth at 8pm and Oxenhope at 8.10pm.

Flying Scotsman recently topped a poll of the world’s best-known trains and locomotives, commissioned by the National Railway Museum.

The Telegraph & Argus is running a live blog and picture gallery of the journey on its website today.
