A PUB in Birstall, which was taken over 15 months ago, has been named pub of the season by the Campaign for Real Ale's Heavy Woollen branch.

Since taking on The Scotland on Bradford Road, Collette and Charlie Hemingway have helped to make the pub a popular venue in the village, building a reputation for real ale.

Andy Kassube, chairman of the CAMRA branch said it was the first award for local couple since taking over the lease.

He said: "The Scotland is a perfect example of the traditional Yorkshire pub which where beer quality and a bar full of friendly locals are a key to its success.

"One of the other main attractions of the pub especially with summer approaching is the beer garden at the rear of the pub and this has helped to develop the pub’s popularity with all age groups."

He added that the pub now has three real ales on offer and an emphasis on Yorkshire brews wherever possible.

It also runs quiz night and open mic night.

The pub won the branch's pub of the season award for winter 2016.
